Alexander Rodchenko Hero Projects
This project was called “Design Hero”, and the premise was each student would engage in an exhaustive deep dive into the history of their favorite designer. During this process, we would create media in a variety of formats to teach other about our different designers. For me, it was a no-brainer to choose Alexander Rodchenko. I have a fascination with pre-Stalin Russian art and film, and Alexander Rodchenko was one of the most important figures during this period. He helped found the “constructivist” art movement, which focused on the idea of creating forms outside of the influence of reality. He worked in a number of different mediums, but he is best known for his time doing graphic design for a newly established Soviet Union. He designed nearly every cover for Novyi LEF and LEF publications, government sponsored pamphlets which included information on Russia’s avante-garde scene, defining the visual language of the Soviet Union.
